Channels or Layers • How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Channels.
How are they different? Layers are a creative feature used for layout and design. It’s not an efficient feature for printing separations. Printing from layers requires extra steps and handling to get professional results. We’ll go into detail on working with and troubleshooting layers in another video.
Channels are the best way to create, manage, and print solid and halftone spot color separations. Screen printers have specific separation needs. Using channels is the best way to get the control we need. Multichannel mode separations are easy to handle and print.
Here’s how…
Remove the RGB or CMYK channels from your Photoshop file. This automatically converts the file to the Multichannel mode. Click and Drag. Now convert all channels to spot colors. Double Click. Regardless of the color used, spot color channels will now properly print solid or halftone through AccuRIP.
The solidity setting only affects what is seen on-screen. For consistency we set ours to 100%. It has no effect on the film printed. Double Click.
After these steps the separations option will be available in the print window.
